The conclusion is towards the bottom of the page!!!!!!!!!!!!
Note to this Group: Well moving the chunks together doesn't really make it a paragraph, but at least it looks like one now! This is okay, but if you want to include this in your portfolio you'll have some work to do. It's choppy and has to much of yourselves in it: summaries need to sound "authorless" more or less. ~Ms. W
Warner Todd Huston, October 26th, 2005, "Feminism Has Become Silly, Maybe Even Dangerous Thesis: Huston thinks that people see women’s rights as dangerous and silly.Throughout the article Houston gives examples of how the "feminism" movement is silly such as, when he describes how at "Amherst Regional High School decided to stop calling freshmen students by that long standing and venerable name. They have decided to call their students "Ninth Graders" instead of freshmen." (Pg 1 Houston) At the beginning of the article Warner Huston discussed women’s rights and how women were uneducated. Then it went on to comparing women's rights and examples of women from previous years. Then the article describes how silly things have changed over the years such as, learning about the vagina monologues but not being able to use the word freshmen and Miss Guevara looks silly by talking about her campaign of getting kids to look at words with "misogynistic, oppressive, or non-inclusive meanings." After silly is the dangerous part which is a bad thing because men don't want women to be the gender in power. Women are taking advantage of the word feminism. Statistics show that the ratio of women to men enrolled in a college is much higher than years ago. There is a "52 women only colleges and universities today in the U.S. yet only 2 male only institutions." (Pg 2 Houston) Houston is saying in the article "Feminism Has Become Silly”, that feminism is starting to get out of control in many different ways.
Outline we worked on in class:
Intro
-Women's rights
-Women were uneducated
-Comparing women's rights from before and examples of women from previous times
Silly
-Silly words that needed to be changed such as "freshman" which are now called "9th graders" because of disputes over the word. Freshmen is apparently just referring to men and is offensive to women.
- They Can talk about the vagina monologues but not use the word freshmen.
- Explains why kids should learn how to distinguish why not to use such words such as freshman
-Mis Guevara looks silly by talking about her campaign of getting kids to look at words with "misogynistic, oppressive, or non-inclusive meanings."
Dangerous
-Higher percentage of women in college then men
-More women only colleges than men, 52:2 ratio
-Since more women are going to college than men, women's rates are increasing while men's rates are decreasing
-People are still perceiving back then as being the same as today
-Women are still doing things as if there was a lot of feminism still and they are still protesting as if it is the same as today as back then.
-Women are using a lot of their time on feminism therefore not focusing their time on studies which is leading to more women for feminism.
Conclusion
At first when we went through the article we thought that the author, Huston, knew what he was talking about and did a very good job writing the article without making us feel like he just didn’t like women getting attention. We thought that his main point was to talk about Feminism. He doesn’t really want women to be the gender in power and he thinks they are taking it out of hand, which he explains with the silly and dangerous parts in the article. He shows logic by using examples to help explain his thoughts and his position on the topic. Which when doing he doesn’t really push us over the top with persuasion, he doesn’t write things that overdo his explanation to make us question his ethics. It wasn’t against women in general but more so about the movement of feminism. Huston did show pathos in his article which helped to persuade us even more, such as when he talked about how they could talk about vagina’s in school but not call 9th graders freshmen. We think that was meant to make us get upset because it is just a silly example and most people would question it and have an opinion about it. We also thought that he had strong ethos, he didn’t really say anything that made us question his ethics. His argument made us think if it was true what he is saying, and it really is getting to that point almost. After discussing the article in the chat we concluded that we can only agree with the Author to a certain extent. We noticed that not once did he mention a positive affect of Feminism which makes it one sided and just because he has a good writing style and made some very good points, it doesn’t mean he shouldn’t include that. For us to be totally persuaded he should have both the positive and negative affects of Feminism on the world today.
